Reasons For Using Perl

The reasons for choosing Perl for much of the development of this website, as well as many of the automated tools of the source tree, is simple - power!

We use the mod_perl module for Apache for the developers' web pages, which allows us to sandwhich their content into the GJT website scheme. This could be done with server side includes, but we would never be able to create the automatic titling and copyright stamping effects.

Perl is also the language behind many of the tools used to manage the Giant Java Tree. No other language could replace it in these special applications.

And Perl gives you the choice of GPL licensing. What more could you ask for? Oh, yeah, Linux... and Apache... and...
